The chiller uses 3/4″ copper tees to connect the outer water jacket, and silicone tubing to connect the inner wort tubing (1/2″ copper). One advantage to this design is the 1/2 diameter of the tubing. Here is the list of parts you will need for this project:

If you don't have a wort chiller you generally need to let the wort cool overnight before it is at a safe temperature to pitch the yeast. As to why something grew in the hose: Solder the three short pieces of tubing (about 3″) into each branch of the tee fitting.

Attach a cold water hose to the tee at the wort outlet side of the chiller. The cold water runs through the 3/4 pipe and cools the wort down on its journey through the many sections. You want the hole to accomodate the 3/8″od copper tubing with a snug fit.

To use your new diy wort chiller, immerse the chiller in the boiling kettle when you have around 10 minutes of boil time remaining to ensure tubing is sterilized by the time it’s time for cooling. The common wort chiller is basically made of a bunch of loops of copper tubing that is suspended in the wort. Then cold water is run through the copper tubing which in turn cools the wort making it ready to put in the final fermentation bucket and pitch the yeast right away.

Also, throw out the old plastic hose and get a new one. This wort is now cooled well enough to allow you to pitch. This is hot side, or at least can be.

The beauty of these is that you can effectively sanitize them by recirculating boiling wort through them for the final several minutes of your boil. I used the following to put the wort chiller together: I then attach a sanitized 3/8” tube to the wort discharge of the cooler (bottom copper) and turn on the cooling water.

It is a bit of a sore subject, but i will discuss it now in hopes nobody repeats my mistakes! The one below is the main one i used, with a few tweaks. (you save ) in stock.

Boiling wort from your boil kettle is pumped in one direction through the chiller and fluid (typically water) is pumped the opposite direction absorbing the heat from the wort. The external pipe is 3/4 diameter, and the internal pipe is 1/2 diameter. Nonetheless, you are right to reclean and resanitize your wort cooler before using it again. The length of 1/2 pipes enclosed by the 3/4 pipe is 22 per tube.

This chiller is about 28 in length not counting the silicone tubing loops on the ends. Sorry it took me so long to respond on this. See more ideas about home brewing, brewing, home brewing beer.

One problem with my diy cfc is a lack of temperature monitor on the wort exit. The cyclone is a chiller made of the lengths of 1/2″ id copper tubing enclosed in 3/4″ copper tubing.
